The Leyend of Chagual

A Guardian Between Worlds, Where Nature and Spirit Converge

Long ago, in the depths of Oaxaca’s Central Valleys, there lived an ancestral tribe known as the Xochaguales—guardians of nature and believers in a world where the tangible and the spiritual coexisted. Among their most revered figures was an enigmatic presence: the Chagual.

A nahual and shaman, the Chagual was said to possess the rare ability to move between realms, communing with the spirits of earth, water, and sky. He would appear within the mezcal fires, emerging through smoke and heat, his eyes illuminated by moonlight—an apparition that inspired both reverence and awe.

Protector of sacred knowledge and mediator between humans and the divine, the Chagual was believed to shape-shift and dwell deep within mountain caves, where he performed rituals to preserve the balance of the world. Yet, while benevolent, he was not without force—when nature was threatened, he became a powerful presence, capable of unleashing storms and upheaval against those who disrupted harmony.

The Xochaguales honored him with offerings of mezcal, flowers, fruits, and sacred herbs, gathering under full moons to share his stories and pass down his wisdom.

Over time, the Chagual transcended form, becoming a lasting symbol of the sacred bond between humanity and nature. Though unseen, his spirit is said to still linger in the mountains—reminding us that true power lies in respect, balance, and reverence for the world that surrounds us.
